About my service

Changing the World

I am a registered childminder providing a home from home care service. I have two children of my own and have qualified as a nurse and specialised in Public Health.

I aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment and provide a wide range of activities. I utilise local parks, shops, green spaces and libraries to provide learning through everday activities and interactions.

Aims and Objectives

To provide a stimulating, safe and caring environment for children aged 12weeks to 12 years.

Offer an inclusive service, accessible to all children in the community.

Ensure each child feels happy, safe and secure, allowing them to learn and develop freely in a play centred environment.

Encourage children to develop positive attitudes and respect for themselves and others, in an environment free from bullying and discrimination.

To form positive relationships with parents and carers, ensuring together we meet the needs of the individual children.

To fully involve parents and carers in decision making, regarding the care and service provided at Extra Special Childcare.

Offer activities which meet the needs of each child, promoting their emotional, social, physical and intellectual development, enabling them to become confident, independent and co-operative individuals as they play, learn and develop.

To monitor, record and share in a child’s development and achievements.

To encourage participation in all planned learning experiences.

To maintain and enhance my knowledge and skills in relation to childcare.

To monitor and evaluate service provision to ensure high quality service is delivered.

Work in partnership with parents to provide high quality play, care and support.

Keep parents informed about any changes to my service and to listen and respond to their views and concerns to enable me to make the right changes.

Communicate effectively with parents and to discuss experiences, progress and any difficulties that may arise.

Work in partnership with local pre-school and schools.

2017

Extra Special Childcare seeks to create an environment that promotes and respects the rights of service users, provides for the health and welfare of those using the service and encourages and reinforces positive behavior of all.

This will be an ongoing process, since the service has a key role in the personal, social and emotional development of each child.  The service aims to:

  • To create an environment which encourages and reinforces good behavior.

  • To define acceptable standards of behavior.

  • To encourage consistency of response to both positive and negative behavior.

  • To promote self-esteem, discipline and positive relationships.

 The childminder will aim:

  • To create a positive climate.

  • To provide a caring and effective learning environment.

  • To show appreciation of the efforts and contribution of all.

  • To emphasise the importance of being an individual.

  • To promote, through example, honesty and courtesy.

  • To encourage relationships based on respect, kindness and the understanding of the needs of others.

  • To ensure fair treatment, regardless of age, race, ability, gender & disability.

Each child can experience and choose from day to day activities that are planned, designed, and evaluated by the childminder.

The activities will be flexible and take account of their development needs, interests, hours and patterns of attendance.

Children will enjoy both organised and free play, leisure and quiet times and have the right to choose.

Children will express their views, make choices and in so doing will directly influence the program of play at the service. They will be consulted with on a daily basis.

They will be able to interact with others or play on their own.

Their progress will be regularly monitored by the childminder, who will use this information to improve the environment, and the learning and teaching resources.

This Promoting Positive Behavior Policy aims to work within the above principles of the ‘Getting it Rights for Every Child’:

The children are actively involved in making decisions about their play and their day.

Children and parent’s wishes are respected and their opinions actively sought.

This is achieved through conversation, small group time, questionnaires, emails, range of techniques such as ‘thumbs up, thumbs down’, ‘Circle Time’, focus groups, Mind Mapping Books, Emotion Talks Boards and Persona Dolls etc.

Materials and resources are carefully arranged to aid accessibility, reduce uncertainty or disruption while providing a wide range of choice and open ended play opportunities.

Encourage and praise children’s efforts, good behavior and participation.

It is essential that all staff working with children are aware of their responsibilities in ensuring and promoting positive relationships and the impact this has on children’s future outcomes and life chances. The importance of respecting children, and ensuring they are welcomed into a safe, secure, loving and familiar environment, cannot be overstated.

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 2006 after attending Napier University for three years. I worked in acute and community settings for over ten years. I then studied Public Health and qualified in 2017. I decided to change careers to be at home more with my own children and provide a reliable service to other working parents and carers.
I have completed my Introduction to Childminding online modules and have attended Basic Life Support Training. I have completed the Hanen More Than Words Communication course and am due to commence Hanen Talkability course in April 2017
